Tommy Squibbs

A Special Arrival

Tommy came into this world in 2019, completing the Squibbs family of five. As the beloved brother to Louie and Reggie, and cherished son to Charlie and Dan, Tommy's presence brought immeasurable happiness to everyone who knew him.

Born with Down Syndrome, this was merely one aspect of Tommy's rich character—never defining him, but certainly contributing to his exceptionally loving, gentle and cheeky personality that captured hearts everywhere. The Squibbs family were blessed with three wonderful years of Tommy being his happy, healthy self—years filled with laughter, discovery and precious moments together.

Tommy and Mr Tumble

During this time, Tommy developed a special fondness for Justin Fletcher, known to many children as Mr Tumble and as Justin from Justin's House. Communication through Makaton signing became Tommy's way of expressing himself, and watching Mr Tumble sign on his programmes greatly supported his development. With his remarkable memory, Tommy would delightfully re-enact his favourite scenes—his own special way of showing which episodes he wanted to watch!

An Unexpected Challenge

In September 2023, everything changed when the family returned from holiday with a noticeably different Tommy. He was unusually lethargic, had developed a pin-prick rash, and was showing some bruising. Initially thinking it might be a viral infection, Tommy was taken to the doctor, but it was at Oldham Hospital that the family received the devastating news—Tommy had Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

Though initially told that Tommy had what was considered 'the better' type of leukaemia with approximately 95% recovery rates, the family later discovered that Tommy had a rare gene mutation that rendered the chemotherapy ineffective. Tragically, no cure had been found for this particular cancer when linked with that specific gene mutation. In December 2023, the heartbreaking revelation came that this would be Tommy's last Christmas.

A Dream Come True

Tommy became a star himself, featuring prominently in an episode of CBeebies Bedtime Stories called "The Hospital Dog." During the outtakes, Tommy had the opportunity to sign with Justin and meet Dodge the dog.

Though initially shy—perhaps overwhelmed by seeing Justin Fletcher in real life—Tommy soon warmed up, beautifully signing and joining in with songs from "Something Special."

Just after celebrating his 4th birthday in November 2023, something magical happened at Manchester Children's Hospital—a very special visitor arrived: Justin Fletcher! Tommy's greatest wish came true as he met his idol in person.

The videos captured that day are treasured beyond measure by the Squibbs family.

It was on that remarkable day that Justin Fletcher affectionately named Tommy his very own "Tommy Tumble"—a name that immediately stuck and later inspired the name of this special place, "Tommy Tumble Town."

Everyone present—the production staff and all who met him—was captivated by Tommy's special charm, but as his parents proudly note, "only we got the pleasure to call him 'our son'."

Tommy's Legacy

The Squibbs family wanted to create a space where other children could experience the joy of role play that Tommy so loved. With the incredible support of friends, family, and even strangers touched by their story, funds were raised for the family. A significant portion of these donations was dedicated to creating this lasting legacy.

Tommy's journey with us was tragically cut short, but his spirit lives on through this centre. Created in his honour, this space embodies the joy, curiosity and love that Tommy shared with everyone he met. Every child who plays here becomes part of Tommy's continuing story—a story of finding happiness in simple pleasures, connecting through play, and embracing life with Tommy's infectious enthusiasm.

Tommy "Tumble" Squibbs, you are deeply loved and will never be forgotten.
